Comments: I pray that everyone remembers that we as people are more alike than we are different, and that in our "core", we have the same hopes, dreams, and wishes. It time to respect the few differences that each culture and nation has, and embrace each other in the name of humanity. We all worship differently, we all salute a different color flag, but if someone were to cut each one of us open, we are all the same, our blood is red. As a mother, as a sister, as a daughter, and as a person, I pray for all violence to end, and I hope that the USA has the strength and the will and the power to realize that sometimes being a so called superpower means not having to show your power.

Comments: Thanks for your terrific site! I am very troubled by the direction that the Islamic clash with modernity seems to be taking, and found your informative and helpful web pages in my search for information about the empirical results of total Islamic government control in Afghanistan. (The results are quite tragic for the people of Afghanistan)

I have 20 years experience in civil engineering all around Iran, I work with many nice Afghan workers and I had have friendly relationship with them. I hope this war ends soon and Talebanism end in Afghanistan as soon as possible. I am ready to help in any kinds of job.

Comments: I really can't believe what I have read written by my fellow citizens. May God have mercy on the USA, whose vocal population now appears to be as full of hatred as the Jihad. Wow... Although retribution is the God-given responsibility of the Government, we seem to think it also belongs to us individually. Or maybe we want the "privilege" of revenge. Yes, I know the feelings of shock and anger and fear that we all have. However, may we take this time to truly learn about "loving our enemies"- after all Christ did not come and die for friends, but for ENEMIES...

Comments: This is my first time on this website. It is very informative and I can't believe some of the ignorance of the letters to the editors. It is with sites like this that we will be able to more clearly understand cultures not of our own. And, Afghanistan is a culture which the yuppy west will never comprehend. To have knowledge first is to understand. Keep up the good work.

Hi all, My name is Anton LeRoux-Marx and I visited Afghanistan in 1973 (overland from Istanbul, Turkey). With all that's going on at the moment, I have had occasion to mentally revisit Afghanistan many times. This prompted me to search the net for info and your site came up often. I visited Herat (entered at Tiabad border), Mazar-i-Sharif, Joshi, Kabul, Bamian, Jalalabad, Kandahar and then back to Herat (my favourite after maybe Mazar). If any-one was there at the time (left the day before the borders were closed by the 1973 take-over!), please drop me a line. Thank ya,

Comments: Since the September 11 disasters happened I've been some personal research on Afghanistan & Islam so i can have a better understanding of your culture. I think this site is a good place to start for that purpose. I knew Afghanistan wasn't to blame for 9-11, & this site helped confirm my thoughts. The only parties to blame are Osama bin Laden $ The Taliban (for harbouring that psychotic sack of ****.) I hope more Americans find this site, so they can develop an understanding of Afghanistan, It's people, it's culture. MAY WE ALL LIVE IN PEACE :)

Capt. Thomas Alexander SOUTER of the 44th Regiment of Foot, (later The Essex
Regiment), was captured in 1842 during the retreat from Kabul at the Battle of
Gundermuck, some twenty miles short of safety at Jalalabad. He was, I believe,
the only British officer to survive; having wrapped the Regimental Colours
around his torso to save them. During his captivity near Kabul he was well
treated, being allowed to correspond with his wife. On his release the Colours
were returned to him by his capturers. Should anybody know anything of this
incident I would be most interested. Capt. SOUTER was my great great
grandfather, two of his daughters marrying two SELLON brothers, but I know
nothing further of him
