Sports Culture
Citizens of Trinidad and Tobago are great sport lovers, and the nationalpassion is cricket; the sport's year begins in January with the RedStripe Cup cricket matches. The nation's best known cricketer is Brian Lara from Santa Cruz, Trinidad, who in April 1994 scored 375 runs, breaking a World Test record of 365 runs set by Sir Garfield Sobers. Lara's record of 501 runs was reached in a match for Warwickshire, Eng. Football is another favourite national pastime, and football stars - Dwight Yorke of Manchester United; Shaka Hislop, who plays for West Ham United, and Stern John, who plays for Nottingham Forest, to name three in English teams - enjoy great celebrity. In June, Caribbean Cup football matches are played in the Hasely Crawford Stadium, which is located on the outskirts of Port of Spain.
Led by Sir Lennox O'Reilly, the republic organised its first Olympic committee in 1946. It has been represented in the Olympic Games since 1948, when it was entered in bicycling, weightlifting and track events. In the London Games in 1948, Rodney Wilkes of Trinidad won the republic's first medal, a silver in the featherweight class for weightlifting. Ato Boldon, world 200-metre champion in 1997, was a double bronze medallist at the 1996 Atlanta Games, competing in both the 100- and 200-metres. Trinidad and Tobago's only gold medal was won in Montreal in 1976 by 100-metre sprinter Hasely Crawford; the national stadium in Trinidad is named for him.
