What: A Cultural Journey: The Art of
Afghanistan (3rd Annual Afghan Art Exhibit)
When: December 6th, 2003 - January 31st, 2004
Where: Willits Center Gallery, 3755 Washington Blvd. Fremont,
CA 94538
Information: The Society of Afghan Professionals (SAP) with
Willits Center Gallery is hosting the 3rd Annual Afghan Art Exhibit in
Fremont, California. This year’s exhibit theme, “A Cultural Journey,
The Art of Afghanistan” will promote a side of Afghanistan and the
Afghan culture that is often not portrayed by the mainstream media. The
goal of the exhibit is to convey the message that Afghans have
been on a culture journey for hundreds of years and Afghanistan is a
blend of extraordinarily diverse cultural and religious influences
throughout the centuries as reflected by the art in the exhibit.
“To me Afghanistan is a poetic, exotic, ancient culture that
transcends current events and what we read in the newspaper daily,”
states Norman Hodgson, Director of Willits Center Gallery. This is
the first time that the Afghan Art Exhibit will be held in the heart of
the Afghan community often referred to as “Little Kabul,” the
largest Afghan community in the world outside of Afghanistan. This
is also the first time that art directly from Afghanistan will be
displayed by talented artists who have lived through the havoc of the
past 20 years as well as art from Afghan children which reflects their
reality and the innocence that’s been stolen from them. The display
will consist of several sections, including art and sculpture covering
the Buddhist period, Islamic art, Contemporary period photos and
paintings, photos of Afghanistan by Afghans who have returned to a home
that they never thought would be able to see as well as photos by
professional photographers. Also in display are colorful silk
textiles, traditional clothing, gems and jewelry, pottery and a
documentary on Afghan music. Nilufar Shuja: Society of Afghan
