Colours of the Afghan Flag and its meaning

BLACK is the time period of the three Anglo-Afghan wars between 1839-1919, in which Afghanistan fought three brutal wars with the British. Afghanistan was never a colony of the British or any other country but Britain had control of the Afghan foreign affairs, until August 19,1919.
RED is blood and war, the struggle for freedom and also represents poverty, hardship.
GREEN means Peace and symbolizes the colour of Islam.

A new flag was officially hoisted over Afghanistan on February 5, 2002
The new flag is similar to the Monarchy flag of 1930-74 with the vertical black, red, green tricolours.

There are 3 phases in the new setup of the government. 3 Phases in creating a democratic government in Afghanistan. The second phase which starts within 6 months from the Bonn meeting in December of 2001. The second phase is decided by the Grand Assembly (Loya Jirga). The third phase and final phase is the general elections within 2-3 years from the start of the second phase.
